Does Tricare Cover Mental Health Treatment?
Tricare understands that a well-rounded insurance plan doesn’t just cover physical ailments such as broken bones, influenza, or surgery. Everyone’s mental health is part of the big picture when it comes to staying healthy. For this reason, Tricare offers coverage for mental health disorders. Tricare for mental health affords active and retired military members and their families the ability to get the help they need.
Requirements for referrals and steps to take to get help vary, depending on the person. The Tricare website states that a person does not need a referral or pre-authorization in order to begin outpatient treatment for mental health such as counseling and therapy. The exception to this is psychoanalysis. Be aware that using a provider outside of the network can mean incurring a higher cost than those who are in-network. Â
An individual in need of psychoanalysis or other care from a provider that is not a military hospital or clinic must get a referral for non-emergency treatment prior to beginning this type of care.  Â
Active duty members need to obtain a referral and pre-authorization before they may begin treatment for their mental health in the Tricare network. However, they do not need it in order to get outpatient mental health care from military clinics and hospitals.

How Do I Know I Need Mental Health Treatment?
Mental health disorders can be tricky in that a person may not be sure they have one. It can also be difficult to identify a mental illness in a partner, child, or another loved one. While each type of mental illness has its own set of signs and symptoms, many of these symptoms overlap. Common signs to look out for in order to determine if someone needs mental health treatment include the following:
Â
- Extended periods of depression
- Feeling hopeless
- Anxiety
- Panic attacksÂ
- Flashbacks to a traumatic event
- Cognitive difficulties
- Trouble focusingÂ
- Isolating from others
- Avoiding hobbies and social situations that used to interest the person
- Insomnia
- Sleeping too much
- Lethargy
- Excessive energy
- Change in weight
- Decrease or increase in appetite
- Paranoia
- Hallucinations
- Delusions of grandeur
- Unexplained physical ailments like headaches, body aches, nausea, and diarrhea
- Suicidal ideation
- Using drugs or alcohol to cope with symptoms of mental illness
Military members in particular risk developing PTSD. It can come from participating in or witnessing an act of war or through military service in general, particularly during combat. Many veterans feel hesitant to seek help out of fear of judgment or that it could affect their active duty careers. Anyone who suspects they may have PTSD deserves to get help and should not ignore the need for it.
