If you’ve been thinking about participating in a mental health retreat, be sure you get answers to some important questions before you sign up. For example, what is the agenda for the retreat? What costs will you be responsible for? And are mental health retreats covered by insurance?
What Are Mental Health Retreats?
Mental health retreats are structured programs that allow people to disconnect from the stresses and pressures of everyday life. Usually for individuals who want to focus on their health and well-being. Some places refer to these events as wellness retreats or wellness vacations.
There is no standard duration for a mental health retreat. Some are structured as weekend getaways. Some as weeklong experiences, as well as some provide the opportunity to stay for 30 days or longer.
Schedule and location can also vary widely from one retreat to the next. For example, some retreats aim to showcase specific destinations. Such as relaxing at the beach, enjoying quiet moments in the mountains, or touring a particular nation or region. Others focus on activities, such as yoga, hiking, meditation, spiritual renewal, or nutrition education.

Why Do People Go on Mental Health Retreats?
People attend mental health retreats for myriad reasons. Here are just a few examples:
- They simply want to “unplug” and spend some time away from the demands of their daily life.
- They hope to get help for a challenge they’ve been having. Such as learning to manage stress better or develop healthier nutritional habits.
- They want to briefly immerse themselves in another culture and experience another way of life.
- They want to meditate, practice yoga, and reconnect with their inner selves.
- They want to challenge themselves physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
Please note that these are not the only factors that might motivate someone to participate in a mental health retreat. There may be as many reasons for going as there are people who decide to go.
Are Mental Health Retreats Covered by Insurance?
If you’ve spent much time learning about mental health retreats, you may have noticed that some can be quite expensive. Costs associated with retreats can include transportation, lodging and meals. As well as fees for participating in classes, attending educational sessions, or receiving treatment.
Of course, the price can vary depending on where the retreat will be held and what activities you will be participating in. For example, a weekend meditation retreat at a center a short drive from your home will likely be much less expensive than a weeklong wellness tour through another country.
Which leads us to the question that prompted this post: Are mental health retreats covered by insurance?
In most cases, it’s unlikely that you will be able to use your insurance to fund your participation in a mental health retreat. We’re refraining from saying “never” when discussing whether insurance covers mental health retreats, primarily because there are so many types of retreats and insurance plans. Some aspects of certain retreats may be covered by some insurers – but these circumstances are likely to be rare.
Now that we’ve established that insurance almost universally does not cover mental health retreats, an understandable follow-up question would be, “Why not?”
The reason insurance companies usually don’t cover these events or experiences is that, although the general description may include the words “mental health,” the retreats themselves are essentially all-inclusive vacations.
This isn’t meant to imply that mental health retreats can’t provide value for your mental and physical well-being. Nor is it intended to cast aspersions on those who create and promote such opportunities.
Being able to spend a weekend, a week, a month, or longer immersed in an activity that is of great interest to you can do wonders for your mind and body.
But doing so doesn’t necessarily qualify as healthcare, particularly in the eyes of insurance providers.
Alternatives to Mental Health Retreats
If you can’t afford a mental health retreat, that doesn’t mean you will permanently prevent yourself from taking some time to nourish your mind, body, and/or soul. Similarly, if you simply don’t want to spend your money for that purpose, there are still options available for you. You can prioritize self-care without necessarily attending a retreat.
Here are a few alternatives that you may want to consider:
- Find local groups or organizations focused on a topic you want to learn more about or an activity you’d like to participate in. You don’t have to fly to Tuscany to learn how to prepare healthy meals. Nor do you need to be at a mountaintop spa to reap the many benefits of meditation.
- Focus on the reason why the retreat interested you in the first place. Then, find another way to address that need. For example, if you wanted to go on a retreat to learn more about a certain spiritual practice, there are a variety of ways to accomplish these goals without breaking the proverbial bank. You can explore local workshops, join online communities, or seek out inexpensive retreat options closer to home. The same applies if you’re looking to develop your stress-management skills or simply get away from work for a while.
- Consider professional treatment. If you were hoping that a retreat would “snap you out” of a depressive episode or help you cope with a traumatic experience from your past, you may benefit from talking to a therapist or contacting a mental health treatment center. As an added bonus, you may have a much better chance of being able to use your insurance for these types of services.
